Five passengers dive with the 'Titan' to the wreck of the 'Titanic.' Contact is lost. Five days later, debris from the 'Titan' is discovered on the seabed at a depth of about 3,800 meters. Was it an accident – or irresponsibility? The Terra X documentary reveals the true reasons behind the cause.

The final dive of the submersible 'Titan' begins on June 18, 2023, at 9:14 a.m. local time. At the control stick is its builder and head of the operating company OceanGate, Stockton Rush. On board are French 'Titanic' expert and deep-sea researcher Paul-Henri Nargeolet, British businessman Hamish Harding, as well as Shahzada Dawood, a Pakistani-British businessman, and his 19-year-old son Suleman.

Their destination is the legendary wreck of the 'Titanic,' lying 3,800 meters deep off the coast of Newfoundland. Around 25 times the 'Titan' has already set out on dives in the North Atlantic to the Titanic wreck, but it has only reached the ocean liner’s remains 13 times. After two hours, the 'Titan' is supposed to reach the wreck on the seabed, but after 105 minutes, the support ship loses contact with the submersible. The 'Titan' is missing.

The U.S. Coast Guard, together with Canadian units, begins a large-scale search involving millions of people worldwide – because time is short: the oxygen supply on board the 'Titan' lasts only 96 hours. After five days of intensive searching, the sad certainty: a specially deployed remote-operated vehicle discovers debris on the seabed just 500 meters from the Titanic wreck. Apparently, the 'Titan' imploded already during its descent. The passengers must have died immediately.

Within just a few days, the investigation into the fatal dive begins. All recoverable remains of the 'Titan' are carefully retrieved from its grave in the depths – the U.S. Coast Guard hopes to gain important information about the cause of the accident. The central questions are: What exactly triggered the implosion of the submersible? Why did the operating company OceanGate never register the 'Titan' with authorities nor have it independently inspected for safety? And was the submersible properly maintained after its deep-sea dives?

Step by step, the documentary uncovers the background and true causes of the accident. A story between fascination with technology and hubris, a modern legend of an Icarus who did not want to fly to the sun but to the ocean floor, ignoring all warnings – with fatal consequences, not only for himself.
