PACIFIC PALISADES, CA (CNS) – A brush fire, fueled by strong Santa Ana winds, burned more than 1,200 acres in Pacific Palisades on Tuesday, damaging homes, prompting thousands to evacuate, and putting over 13,200 structures at risk. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The fire started around 10:30 a.m. near Piedra Morada and Monte Hermoso drives, rapidly expanding to 1,262 acres by the afternoon with no containment. Mandatory evacuations were enforced across much of Pacific Palisades, leading to the displacement of 30,000 residents. Traffic congestion occurred on evacuation routes due to abandoned vehicles, and some residents had to flee on foot.

Evacuation centers were established at Westwood Recreation Center for people and Pierce College for large animals, while smaller animals were directed to the Agoura Animal Care Center. Air tankers and helicopters dropping water assisted firefighters in battling the blaze, but strong winds impeded containment efforts.

Malibu issued evacuation alerts for areas between Carbon Beach Terrace and Las Flores Mesa Drive. By nightfall, the fire spread southward towards the coast and westward towards Malibu, crossing Tuna Canyon Road. Several structures, including homes and possibly portions of Palisades Charter High School, were destroyed.

Despite vegetation on the site burning, the Getty Villa was protected due to fire prevention measures. Museum galleries were shielded from smoke using advanced systems, and water storage and irrigation were employed to safeguard the property.

Road closures included sections of Pacific Coast Highway, the 10 Freeway, and Sunset Boulevard, making evacuations more challenging.

Given red flag warnings, officials foresaw deteriorating conditions overnight as winds picked up. Emergency proclamations were issued by local and state authorities, with Governor Gavin Newsom securing federal aid. President Joe Biden granted a Fire Management Assistance Grant to assist with firefighting expenses.

Student populations from various schools, such as Palisades Charter Elementary and Paul Revere Middle School, were relocated to safer locations by city officials. The South Coast AQMD issued a smoke advisory due to hazardous air quality, advising residents to remain indoors.

LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley and Mayor Karen Bass urged residents to adhere to evacuation orders. 'This is an extremely dangerous situation,' Bass stated.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation
