Before dawn, torrential rain in the Texas Hill Country sent a wall of water racing down the Llano River toward Junction. The owner of South Llano RV Park says he first noticed an unusual roar outside his window; by the time he stepped onto his porch the river had already spilled its banks. In the space of a few minutes the normally quiet campground was under several feet of fast-moving, debris-filled water. Picnic tables, propane tanks, and entire travel trailers began to float or roll as the current intensified, snapping power lines and cutting off every road leading out of the park.

Realizing how rapidly the flood was rising, the owner jumped into action. He sprinted from site to site banging on doors, shouting for campers to evacuate immediately. Some guests woke up to find water swirling around their tires; others had to wade through chest-deep water to reach higher ground. Using pickup trucks, a small fishing boat, and even a tractor, employees and volunteers formed an improvised rescue chain, pulling people and pets to safety. Within half an hour, however, the river had swallowed the entire lower loop of the campground, making further rescues impossible until first responders arrived.

Helicopters from the Texas Department of Public Safety and high-water rescue teams from multiple counties converged on the scene at daybreak. The owner estimates that more than thirty recreational vehicles were destroyed or swept downstream, with damage extending well beyond the park’s boundaries. Despite the chaos, he credits quick thinking, loud alarms, and help from neighboring ranchers for preventing loss of life. The only injuries reported were minor cuts and bruises sustained during frantic escapes.

Standing amid twisted metal frames and piles of silt, the owner reflects that he has lived beside the Llano River for decades and has never witnessed water rise so violently or so high. He vows to rebuild on higher ground, emphasizing that the disaster is a stark reminder of how suddenly flash floods can strike in Central Texas.
