Nyesom Wike uses the Politics Today interview to clarify why the G-5 governors pressed for a coalition inside the PDP and later reached out across party lines. He argues that zoning principles and internal democracy were violated during the presidential primaries, so forming a tactical alliance became the only way to protect southern interests and restore balance. According to Wike, the group’s real goal was never to destroy the PDP but to compel leadership to honour prior power-rotation agreements, ensure transparency in campaign financing and rebuild public trust in political parties.
Turning to Rivers State, the former governor lists signature projects—such as the Port Harcourt Ring Road, several flyovers and the modernised law school campus—as proof that purposeful governance is possible even in a volatile oil-producing region. He dismisses accusations of political intolerance, claiming that most conflicts in the state stem from outsiders bent on destabilising the Niger Delta for economic gain. Wike insists that his administration widened the fiscal space, increased internally generated revenue and prioritised security, thereby encouraging new investment in agriculture, tech hubs and real-estate development across Rivers.
On President Bola Tinubu’s government, Wike praises the early removal of the petrol subsidy and the push for fiscal reforms, calling them tough but necessary decisions that previous administrations avoided. He believes Tinubu’s record as Lagos governor shows he understands urban infrastructure, state policing and revenue diversification, which could benefit the entire federation if replicated at the national level. Wike pledges to support legislation that devolves more powers to sub-national units, arguing that true federalism will reduce tension in the Niger Delta while unlocking Nigeria’s manufacturing potential.
The interview also addresses rumours about Wike’s own political future. He neither confirms nor rules out accepting a ministerial role, maintaining that public office should be a platform for service rather than an entitlement. He stresses that any formal alignment with the APC must be anchored on a written programme that safeguards Rivers’ interests, guarantees fair appointment quotas for the South-South and strengthens the judiciary’s independence.
Throughout the conversation, Wike returns to a core theme: national cohesion can only be achieved when political actors place constitutional fidelity above personal ambition. He calls on opposition parties to provide constructive criticism, urges citizens to monitor budget implementation and insists that ethnic or religious mobilisation has no place in modern Nigerian politics.
