CF Montréal came out with heavy pressure at Stade Saputo and were rewarded early: former Inter Miami midfielder Bryce Duke pounced on a turnover in the build-up, drove into the box and slotted low into the corner for 1–0. The hosts stayed aggressive, but Lionel Messi soon took control of the tempo. In the 22nd minute he played a quick one-two with Matías Rojas, who blasted the equaliser from roughly 20 metres with his left foot. Just before the break, Messi followed up a Jordi Alba cross, danced past two defenders and finished from eight metres to put Inter Miami 2–1 ahead.

After the interval Montréal kept pushing forward, yet another flash of Messi brilliance settled matters. In the 59th minute the Argentine chipped the ball over the back line to Luis Suárez; the Uruguayan met it on the volley to make it 3–1—Messi’s third goal involvement of the night. Miami then sat deeper, looking to counter, and created good chances through Suárez and Rojas, but Jonathan Sirois produced several fine saves.

The final stages were frantic. Montréal went all-out attack, bringing on, among others, Josef Martínez, eager to impress against his former club. In the 82nd minute Martínez headed in an Ariel Lassiter cross to cut the deficit to 3–2, prompting Miami to switch to a game-management approach. In stoppage time Drake Callender tipped a long-range effort from Sunusi Ibrahim over the bar to preserve the 3–2 away win.

The victory cements Inter Miami’s lead atop the Eastern Conference, while CF Montréal remain empty-handed despite a spirited performance. Lionel Messi once again showcased his genius: one goal, two assists and involvement in virtually every dangerous attack for the Herons
