Adolfo Macías, aka “Fito,” leader of the criminal group “Los Choneros” and one of Ecuador’s most wanted drug traffickers, was captured in a luxurious house with an underground bunker in Manta, Manabí province, through an operation coordinated with nearly 200 police and military personnel. The capture represents a significant blow to the government of President Daniel Novoa and the fight against organized crime in Ecuador.

The operation was made possible thanks to information provided by a reward system, military intelligence, and an informant inside the criminal organization itself. Fito was weakened and had reduced his inner circle to four lieutenants, who were also arrested. Among them was Cristian Mendoza, supervisor at the Manta Mobility Secretariat, revealing the penetration of organized crime into local politics.

The recapture was also possible due to the recent approval of an intelligence law, which allowed triangulating communications and surrounding the place where Fito was hiding. After his capture, he was transferred to the maximum-security prison La Roca in Guayaquil. The Ecuadorian government seeks Fito’s extradition to the United States, where he faces charges of international cocaine trafficking and could be sentenced to up to 100 years in prison.

The video explains that Fito’s criminal network involved close family members, including parents, siblings, ex-wife, and current partner, who managed a complex money laundering structure called “Blanqueo Fito.” This structure included contracts with the Ecuadorian State, such as bottled water supply to prisons, demonstrating how organized crime had managed to infiltrate public entities.
