Adrie van der Poel looks back at the incident that cost Jasper Philipsen a stage victory in the 2025 Tour de France. The former champion explains that within the Alpecin–Deceuninck team there is no anger toward the commissaires; the decision is accepted as part of the regulations. The first reaction was mainly sadness for Philipsen, who was denied a win built on meticulous preparation and perfect positioning in the finale. Van der Poel insists on the need to respect safety rules in mass sprints, even when they may seem severe.

He then highlights the collective effort during the stage: the sprint train put Jasper in the best possible wheel, Mathieu van der Poel played his lead-out role perfectly, and the tactic agreed upon that very morning was executed almost flawlessly. It is precisely this team cohesion that makes the penalty even harder for the riders and staff to accept. Adrie nevertheless reminds everyone that the Tour de France is won through consistency; losing one battle does not prevent winning the green jersey or a later stage.

The Dutchman also analyzes the psychological aspect: Philipsen must turn disappointment into motivation. In his view, the Belgian sprinter has shown over the past two seasons that he can handle pressure and rebound quickly. Management therefore favors trust and dialogue to prevent any feeling of injustice from taking hold. Van der Poel Sr. cites the example of Mathieu, accustomed to the ups and downs of modern cycling, to illustrate the resilience required over three weeks.

Asked about the rest of the 2025 Tour, Adrie van der Poel confirms that the goal remains the same: stage wins and, if possible, the points classification. The upcoming flat stages still offer several opportunities for Philipsen, and Alpecin–Deceuninck has no intention of changing its attacking strategy. The team will continue to protect its sprinter while keeping an eye on breakaways that might suit Mathieu.

Finally, Van der Poel ends on an optimistic note. The mishap in Nogaro in 2023 already showed the squad’s ability to bounce back, and this year will be no exception. In the Tour de France, any day can bring back a smile, and the experience gained in difficult moments forges great victories
