**Cardinal Robert Preboz becomes Leo XIV, the new North American pope of the Catholic Church**
In a historic event that marks a milestone in the Catholic Church, American Cardinal Robert Preboz has been elected as the new Pope, taking the name Leo XIV upon his assumption of the papacy. This election represents the first time in the history of the Church that an American occupies the throne of St. Peter, breaking with previous traditions that limited the selection of non-European pontiffs.
Born in Chicago and of Franco-Italian and Spanish descent, Leo XIV has dedicated his life to religious and missionary service, working closely with Latin American and indigenous communities. Well-versed in the realities of Latin America, he has held important roles in Peru and has been an active advocate for issues affecting the region.
With a broad education and command of several languages, including Spanish, Leo XIV is described as a man close to Spanish-speaking communities and a bridge for dialogue between sectors of the Church that have been distant in the past. His experience as a bishop in Peru and his work as prefect of the dicastery for bishops and the pontifical commission for Latin America give him a pastoral and comprehensive approach.
The election of Leo XIV as pontiff has been met with enthusiasm and surprise worldwide, especially in Latin America, where his leadership is expected to strengthen ties within the Church and foster unity among the faithful. Despite previous differences and tensions in the Church, a pontificate is envisioned that seeks to bring different sectors closer and work towards a better world.
In this new chapter for the Catholic Church, Leo XIV presents himself as a leader committed to the teachings of Jesus Christ and to the mission of spreading the Gospel message to all corners of the world. His election marks a significant change in the history of the Church and opens up new possibilities for internal dialogue and cooperation within the global Catholic community
