The terror of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) has spread fear and horror worldwide in recent years. Brutal attacks in European cities, unimaginable oppression in IS-controlled territories, and propaganda have dominated headlines. But after a peak between 2015 and 2018, the IS seemed to have disappeared from the news – until the devastating attack on a concert hall in Moscow in 2024, where 140 people were murdered. Experts confirmed that the IS was responsible for the attack, once again showing its threatening presence.

The history of the IS dates back to its founding as a branch of al-Qaeda. The terrorist organization took advantage of unstable conditions in countries like Syria and Iraq to establish itself as a powerful force. In 2014, the IS declared the caliphate and established a regime of terror that brutally oppressed the population. The leaders of the IS interpreted Islam extremely fundamentally and viewed all non-Muslims as enemies to be fought.

The IS also found supporters in Europe, who joined or carried out attacks in its name. The IS's propaganda on social media platforms was skillful and attracted supporters from various countries, including Europe. Terrorist attacks in cities like Paris, Nice, Berlin, London, and Stockholm, where the perpetrators claimed allegiance to the IS, contributed to fear and insecurity.

The international community, led by the United States and local forces, began a determined counteroffensive against the IS. The IS gradually lost its power base in Syria and Iraq, and its territory significantly shrank. However, the IS continues to try to gain influence and spread fear in other countries.

The threat of the IS remains relevant for Germany, especially in light of upcoming major events such as the European Football Championship. The developments surrounding the IS show that despite apparent weakening, the danger posed by terrorism and extremist groups persists. It is important to remain vigilant and work together to combat any form of extremism to ensure security and stability
