Pound-for-pound great Canelo Álvarez delivered a vintage performance by dropping the previously undefeated Jaime Munguia on Saturday night to earn a unanimous decision in a thrilling all-Mexican clash presented by Canelo Promotions. The fight headlined a PBC Pay-Per-View event on Prime Video at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
In his fourth defense of the WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO 168-pound world titles, Canelo showcased his skill and talent, securing the victory with scores of 117-110, 116-111, and 115-112. While Munguia fought bravely and stayed busy in the ring, Canelo consistently landed the more effective punches throughout the 12 rounds.
Canelo expressed the significance of the win, stating, “This win means a lot. I’m glad I gave him this opportunity. Munguia is a great guy and a great champion. He’s going to have a great career, and I'm proud that the whole world is watching us Mexicans.”
Although Munguia acknowledged his strong start in the early rounds, he recognized Canelo’s experience, saying, “I let my hands go, but he’s a fighter with a lot of experience. The loss hurts because it’s my first loss and I felt strong.”
Despite Munguia's efforts, Canelo showcased his expertise, particularly in round four with a left hook-uppercut that floored Munguia. Canelo’s calculated approach and precision in landing shots allowed him to control the fight.
Munguia acknowledged Canelo's skill, conceding, “There’s no doubt I would have beaten anyone else tonight. He has a lot of experience. I started well, but he’s a fighter who creates a lot of problems.”
Canelo's dominance increased as the fight progressed, securing a unanimous decision with superior shots landed and accuracy. Reflecting on his legacy, Canelo confidently stated, “I know there have been great Mexican fighters in the past, but I'm the best fighting right now. I can do what I want.”
With his future plans open, Canelo expressed readiness to accept challenges based on the right opportunities while emphasizing his current position as one of boxing’s elite fighters
