Liverpool recorded a 3-1 victory over Championship side Preston North End in a competitive workout that combined sharp attacking football with an emotional tribute to the late supporter Diogo. The hosts struck first when a swift break down the left allowed them to sweep a low cross beyond Caoimhín Kelleher, jolting Jürgen Klopp’s team into life. From that moment, Liverpool dominated possession, pressing high and forcing Preston into rushed clearances while probing patiently around the box.

The equaliser arrived through Conor Bradley, whose energy at right-back was a constant feature. Collecting a clever reverse pass from Alexis Mac Allister, the Northern Irishman surged into the area and drilled a low shot across the keeper and inside the far post. Liverpool’s intensity increased after the break and it paid off quickly when Darwin Núñez met Kostas Tsimikas’ curling delivery with a towering header, the Uruguayan’s power overwhelming the keeper to make it 2-1.

Preston rallied briefly, threatening from a couple of set pieces, but Ibrahima Konaté and Joe Gomez dealt confidently with aerial balls while Wataru Endo screened the back line. In transition Liverpool looked dangerous every time Luis Díaz or Dominik Szoboszlai carried the ball forward, and the Reds killed the contest on 78 minutes. Díaz skipped past his marker on the left, pulled the ball back to Cody Gakpo, and the Dutch forward took one touch before side-footing into the bottom corner for a clinical third.

Throughout the encounter the club paid respects to Diogo: players warmed up in commemorative T-shirts, black armbands were worn, and a minute’s applause echoed around the ground prior to kick-off. After scoring, both Núñez and Gakpo raised their hands to the sky, a gesture mirrored by travelling supporters who unfurled a banner reading “You’ll Never Walk Alone, Diogo.” The combination of a polished 3-1 win and heartfelt tributes provided Liverpool with a meaningful evening, enhancing match fitness while honouring a much-loved fan.
