Right from the start of this 17th stage, several riders seeking visibility took advantage of the hilly profile to launch an early breakaway. Despite a vigilant peloton, the leading quartet managed to create a gap that approached five minutes before the sprinter teams – aware of the flat finish in Valence – took control. The pace intensified as rain poured down on the Drôme; the roads became slippery, and the tension increased.

About fifty kilometers from the finish, a first mechanical incident isolated one of the favorites for the green jersey, forcing his team to chase hard in pouring rain. Crosswinds then caused successive splits: several outsiders in the general classification found themselves trapped, having to dig deep to catch up. Meanwhile, the breakaway was caught at 18 km, giving way to a compact but nervous peloton, with everyone trying to reposition themselves before the narrow streets of Valence.

The decisive moment came less than three kilometers from the red flag. On a roundabout taken at high speed, a slide in the first third of the group triggered a massive chain crash. About twenty riders went down, including several well-known sprinters and two teammates of a podium contender. Despite the rapid intervention of medical teams, the accident disrupted the organization: only thirty-five riders passed through the last three kilometers with a sufficient gap to contest the victory.

In a real downpour, the sprint launched at the 250 m mark was a battle among the remaining trains. Taking advantage of a perfectly timed last lead-out, the Dutch sprinter from the OranjePro team secured his second victory in this Tour, narrowly beating the French rider from the BleueHexagone team. Behind them, the gaps were minimal for the general classification thanks to the three-kilometer rule, but some contenders for the green jersey saw their ambitions seriously compromised after the crash.

At the end of the stage, the yellow jersey retained his lead while Tour doctors confirmed several fractures and retirements. The officials announced an investigation into the poorly positioned barriers that may have exacerbated the crash. Meteorologists predicted more showers for the next day's stage, promising a high-tension finish to the Tour
