This video has been trending in Ghana

The video reports that the Accra Circuit Court has sentenced popular Ghanaian spiritualist-turned-evangelist Nana Agradaa, legally known as Patricia Asiedua, to 15 years in prison for defrauding her followers through her infamous “sika gari” money-doubling scheme. After months of adjournments, the presiding judge delivered a consolidated judgment on six counts of defrauding by false pretence and charlatanic advertisement. Agradaa is to serve the jail terms concurrently, making the effective sentence 15 years. In addition to the custodial sentence, the court ordered the forfeiture of GH¢1.6 million—money police traced to accounts used to receive transfers from victims—and barred her from operating any broadcast outlet or prayer camp for ten years after her release.

The prosecution’s narrative, which the court accepted in full, described how Agradaa invited viewers of her Thunder TV and other social-media streams to her Sowutuom church on 5 October 2022, promising to double any cash they brought. Hundreds arrived with sums ranging from GH¢300 to GH¢20,000. After collecting the money in sealed envelopes, Agradaa disappeared backstage, then re-emerged claiming the ritual had failed and that the money would be returned the following Sunday—something that never happened. More than 35 victims testified in court, and police produced mobile-money statements linking their deposits to Agradaa’s personal numbers.

A key element that swayed the judge was video evidence played in court showing Agradaa advertising the scheme in Twi and English, boasting that “anybody who doubts my power will see today.” The defence argued that the videos were for “prophetic drama,” but the court ruled them clear inducements to commit fraud. Agradaa’s lawyers pleaded for mitigation, citing her six children and newly established church, but the judge held that a deterrent sentence was necessary because the convict was a repeat offender who had ignored earlier warnings from both the National Communications Authority and the Traditional Medicine Practice Council.

Outside the courtroom, relatives of the victims broke into chants of gratitude, while a visibly shaken Evangelist Akwasi Asiama—one of Agradaa’s earliest spiritual mentors—told reporters he was “deeply worried and heartbroken.” Asiama said he had repeatedly advised Agradaa to refund the money voluntarily, warning that her refusal could land her in jail. He expressed concern for the welfare of her children and urged other self-styled prophets to learn from the ruling.

The video concludes with legal analysts predicting that Agradaa’s conviction will embolden regulators to clamp down on unlicensed “prophetic” TV shows and social-media streams. They recommend victims of similar schemes come forward quickly, as today’s judgment sets a strong precedent. For now, Agradaa begins her 15-year sentence at Nsawam Female Prison, marking a dramatic fall for a woman who once dominated Ghana’s airwaves with claims of supernatural wealth creation.
