Many people have been wondering how they can help. Here is what I observed on October 1st:

I believe the area is already receiving a lot of genuine assistance. I am uncertain about the need for more hands on deck, but I could be mistaken. The primary requirement is water since water systems have been compromised or contaminated. Donating to a reputable organization for water and food is a good idea. I visited Swannanoa this morning and witnessed the severe devastation. The river caused fatalities, destroyed homes, and wiped out businesses. Random people were setting up tents with water, food, coffee, and snacks. This is a great initiative as people are overwhelmed, exhausted, and in need of these essentials, which they might not be able to access due to various obstacles.

Some communities are isolated on mountaintops because their only access route has been destroyed. They require air drops and rescues, and organizations like Aerial Recovery Group appear to be doing a good job. Donations to them can be made through the links provided.

I trekked about 6 miles into Bat Cave yesterday, but it appears much of it has been lost. However, like everywhere else, they need food, water, and gas. The community's evacuation is hoped for as access to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure from the northwest is blocked. The downstream areas are in chaos, and helicopters are working extensively due to the lack of access.

Performing wellness checks in the region is advisable. United Way provides a means to sign up for wellness checks if you are local. Offering assistance through forums or addressing specific needs is also a possibility.

This is just a snapshot of the situation in a few communities. Asheville, Hendersonville, Burnsville, and the entire region require assistance. Many people are stepping up to help in significant ways. I encountered groups from Myrtle Beach and Cajun Navy providing aid. The Aerial Recovery Group and other organizations actively flying missions in the affected areas are in need of support.
