In November 1989, all border crossings along the Berlin Wall were opened. East German citizens could now travel freely to West Berlin and West Germany. Pedestrians, motorcycles, and cars crossed the border.

Archival footage from November 10, 1989, shows an interview with a border officer near the open border. Since the previous evening, he has been on duty, and the surge of East German citizens is surprising to him. There are no clear instructions on how to deal with the situation. East Berliners continue to flock towards the border crossings to make use of their new right to travel.
