“Irotojomi” opens with the loving but troubled marriage of Teniola (Biola Adebayo) and Akinwunmi (Odun Adekola). Although the couple enjoy material comfort, Teniola battles deep insecurity after several miscarriages, and Akinwunmi hides mounting debts that threaten his business empire. Their façade of perfection begins to crack when an old friend, Dolapo (Jide Awobono), returns from the United Kingdom and offers to bail Akinwunmi out—on the condition that he be allowed to manage the company and move into their home.
Dolapo’s arrival disrupts household harmony. He quickly wins Teniola’s trust, introducing modern accounting systems that expose years of financial mismanagement. Akinwunmi grows resentful, sensing his authority is being undermined. Meanwhile, Dolapo quietly reignites a past romance with Teniola’s younger sister, Jumoke (Ademola Allwell), who has her own agenda of upward mobility. Layered secrets about paternity, property documents, and an undisclosed land deal surface, weaving a tense web of betrayal and loyalty.
Mid-point revelations push the drama into high gear. Teniola discovers that Akinwunmi took a second mortgage on their house without her consent, while Akinwunmi learns that Dolapo’s loan is backed by a corrupt politician seeking to launder money through the company. A heated confrontation leads to Akinwunmi’s abrupt resignation, forcing him to fight for his dignity outside the corporate walls he built. Teniola, reeling from both men’s duplicity, takes control of the firm, determined to protect her family legacy.
The final act brings catharsis as Dolapo’s scheme collapses under police investigation. Jumoke, pregnant and abandoned, reveals Dolapo’s fraudulent contracts. Akinwunmi redeems himself by cooperating with authorities and sacrificing all personal assets to settle outstanding debts. Teniola forgives her husband, recognizing that love without transparency breeds only “iro” (falsehood). Together, they rebuild on the foundation of “otito” (truth), affirming the proverb that gives the film its title: “Iro to jomi, otito ni a ma mu” (“Falsehood that looks like water, truth will eventually drink it”).
“Irotojomi” blends suspense with cultural nuance, showcasing vibrant Yoruba dialogues, humor, and moral lessons about integrity, family unity, and the high cost of greed. From Biola Adebayo’s emotional depth to Odun Adekola’s dynamic charisma, the ensemble delivers compelling performances that keep viewers invested until the closing scene, making this 2025 release a standout in contemporary Yoruba cinema.
